Jakarta Biennale, The Oldest Art Exhibition in Jakarta

The Jakarta Biennale is a biennial event of Indonesian contemporary arts.

Jakarta Biennale (JB) is contemporary art exhibition held biannually in Jakarta. It presents various cultural activities to be enjoyed by citizens as a way to perceive the “city”, an area that is moving and constantly changing. Jakarta, as one of the biggest cities in South East Asia, is strongly dynamic and becomes social, political, economical and cultural mirror of contemporary Indonesia.

After four years of inactivity, the fine art exhibition Jakarta Biennale returns to present the world of art. This year, the exhibition's emphasize the theme 'Esok', aims to bring attention to multiple aspects and issues of human lives, such as gender, environment, climate change, COVID-19 pandemic, and human rights.

Held in Jakarta's National Museum, National Awakening Museum (STOVIA), and several public spaces in Jakarta, including Ismail Marzuki Park, the exhibition are made to help break stigma surrounding art pieces that they are strictly made for a certain group of people. I visited the STOVIA exhibition and was greeted with numerous thought-provoking artworks and performances.

Discussing human rights, diversity, environment, gender equality to digital disruption, the heavy topics are expressed in the corridors through contemporary art. Gazing back to the past and raising hope for tomorrow, ESOK offers the novelty of the future, and how we younger generations can build a new history together.
