My conversation with Raden Prisya about mindfulness have given a fresh perspective about the almost-overrated term.
Mindfulness is an increasingly popular notion in the workplace, with companies such as Apple, Yahoo, Starbucks, and Google using it to their benefit. With mainstream media and influencers around the world talking about mental wellness, healing and the whatnot, the term mindfulness was becoming overused, especially in younger generation. Mindfulness is the act of focusing attention and observing the present moment without a lot of mental dialogue and interpretation. It’s true that mindfulness practice is beneficial in a variety of ways, leading to increased stamina, enhanced working memory, and reduced stress, to name just three. This is why mindfulness is quickly becoming a buzzword in leadership development, as well as on my TikTok FYP where self-proclaimed therapists shares their two cents about the subject.
In one of Pejuang Pulih by POPBELA.com podcast episode, I had the chance to have a conversation with one of Indonesia's Mindfulness & Wellbeing Coach, Raden Prisya. We talked about the importance of mindfulness in everyday-practice, but most importantly in the work place. “Mindfulness is the process of actively noticing things. When we do that, it puts us in the present. It makes us more sensitive to context and perspective. It’s the essence of engagement. The mistake most people make is to assume it’s stressful and exhausting. But what’s stressful is all the mindless negative evaluations we make and the worry that we’ll find problems and not be able to solve them,” explains Raden Prisya.
In terms of business and career, mindfulness also have multiple benefits. These are some reasons why mindfulness is not an overused term after all, if we're able to practice it correctly:
The Ability to Laser Focus on One Thing at A Time
Mindfulness improves our ability to focus on one thing at a time. It teaches us to avoid distractions and bring a heightened level of concentration to our work. While the 'hustle culture' probably promotes multi-tasking every time we can, mindfulness will help us to kick this productivity-killing habit. A focused mind is a productive mind.
Keeping The Stress at Bay
Stress is more than a performance killer; it’s a people killer. It causes high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, cancer, heart disease, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and more. Mindfulness is a great stress reliever because it takes us out of fight-or-flight mode and brings us into a relaxed state of mental clarity and calm.
Optimising Emotional Intelligence, Especially in People Management
Our EQ affects how we manage behaviour, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. EQ is the ability to recognize and understand emotions in ourself and others and to use this awareness to manage our behavior and relationships to others, in this case to our colleagues and teammates. The heightened awareness that exists in a mindful state allows us to more feel, label, and understand emotions clearly.
Mindfulness challenges us to improve in many ways, but its benefits are priceless. As we work to bring in mindfulness, not only will we work well in our tasks, but we also will learn to recognize every problem to its own solutions, rather than stressing and worrying over them.
